Saturday 28 January. Today the 2006 High Council reached its objective – the election of the 18th General of The Salvation Army. Just before four o´clock in the afternoon the President, Commissioner W. Todd Bassett, announced the result of what turned out to be the final ballot: Commissioner Shaw Clifton had the required majority and was now General-elect! | | |

The 2006 High Council has chosen Commissioner Shaw Clifton – currently Territorial Commander, United Kingdom and Ireland - to be the next General of The Salvation Army. The announcement came on Saturday 28 January - day nine of the High Council’s deliberations at Sunbury Court, The Salvation Army’s conference centre just outside London. | | |

The High Council reconvened at 9 am Friday morning for morning worship led by Commissioner Garth McKenzie. After drawing lots to determine the order in which they would speak, the candidates gave the answers they had prepared to the questions. | | |
